As humans we all have the desire to have an impact on the world around us. This desire is no different when it comes to work. In fact, one of the most crucial aspects of job happiness and satisfaction is having an impact at work.
So, what does it mean to have an impact at work? It indicates that your work is making a positive, meaningful difference in the lives of your clients, colleagues, or even the community you are in. Being able to contribute something of value to others gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment at work. When we feel that what we do is making a positive difference, we are more engaged and motivated, which increases our productivity as individuals and improves the performance of the organization as a whole.
How can we have a higher impact then?
This can be achieved through cultivating an impact mindset, attitude and taking suitable actions.
Mindset:
You can have higher impact when you approach your work with the intention of making a meaningful difference.
- Focusing on purpose: Identify the purpose of your work. Having a clear sense of purpose, will make it easier for you to know how your work can have an impact.
- Setting goals: Identify the goals that align with your purpose, which will help you stay focused and motivated.
- Being results-driven: After setting your goals, focus on achieving tangible results that will make the difference. This will help you track your progress and your impact.
- Being proactive: Don’t wait, act. Look for ways to make things happen.
- Learning and adapting: Learn from your experiences, be open for feedback and adapt to new approaches of how things can be done.
Attitude:
Approaching your work with an overall positive attitude.
- Being passionate: Identify what you are passionate about and make it your drive and motivation to work. When you are motivated, you are more focused on having an impact.
- Being positive: Maintain a positive attitude that will lift you up when you face challenges or setbacks. This will help you stay motivated and focused on the impact you are having.,
- Taking risk: Have the flexibility to try new approaches and take risks to achieve better results.
- Celebrating success: take the time to celebrate your own, and other people’s successes and achievements. Recognizing the impact you have on your organization will be your drive to have a bigger impact.
Actions:
Taking the appropriate action that will increase your impact at work.
- Prioritizing tasks: identify the tasks that will result in higher impact and focus on them.
- Collaborating: Impact most often comes from working with others. Seek the opportunities to collaborate with others: clients, colleagues, or other stakeholders, to achieve shared goals and make greater impact.
- Develop new skills: Identify your areas of development that are holding you back from making greater impact and seek opportunities that will help you develop them.
To conclude, we all have the desire to impact other. We are all looking for the meaning and purpose of our work. By cultivating our mindsets, attitudes, and actions to be directed and focus on our impact and the value that we contribute to our work and our communities, we will be able to have a much greater impact that will keep us motivated and eager to make a difference.
